The Job Market: Is a College Degree Worth Less
While reading through this article I have come across many things that stood out to me. One thing that stood out to me was when the author said “the problem is not just a soft market- it’s an oversupply of graduates”. The reason this stood out to me was because it makes me think if college is even worth it since it doesn’t really guarantee you a job. Another thing that stood out to me while reading this article was when the author referred to a degree as “a piece of paper” which for me makes me wonder if my degree is really even going to be worth it. The third and final thing that stood out to me was when the author was talking about how you have to have work experience to make you stand out and not just the degree. With this being said it makes me feel a little overwhelmed and makes me feel like I need to start looking for a job.
Should More People Skip College?
Just like the other article this one talks about how having a degree doesn’t mean much anymore. One thing that stood out to me while reading this article was when the author said that “college education doesn’t isn’t all that necessary anymore” this makes me wonder what am I doing here in college? It makes me wonder if I am just burying myself into a debt that I am going to struggle to get out of. Another fact that the author brought up was that seven of the 30 jobs that were projected to grow in the next decade in the United States do not even require a college degree. Since I am a college student it really makes me worry and wonder if my major is going to do anything for me in the future. One point that the author brought up was that the reason a college degree has become worth so much was because people have just assumed it was worth a lot. I found this interesting because it just makes me wonder what the world would be like if the world thought a college degree was worth a lot less.
Plan B: Skip College
This article covers just about the same topic as the others which is college and if it is really worth it or not. The author of this article stated a fact and that was “80 percent of college students who ranked in the lower quarter of their class in high school probably won’t even receive a bachelor’s degree”. I found this very interesting because I feel like people who do that are just throwing a lot of money right in the trash can. Another point that the author wrote about was that 15 percent of mail carriers have bachelor’s degrees and the author says some of them could have bought a house with the money that they spent on an education. To me that is outrageous to think about and I hope I don’t fall into a category like that. After reading this article I have come to the conclusion that going to college is really a huge risk because it is worth it but at the same time it really isn’t worth it at all.
